Massage Therapist Insurance Overview

In today’s busy world, people are stressed and burned with some of the other tasks. To reduce stress and feel relaxed, people enjoy having massages and go for spa sessions. How often do you prefer to take a massage and go for spas?

Massage therapists are responsible to ensure that their customers and clients are satisfied with the therapy which helps them stay fit and relaxed. However, the risk involved in the massage therapy industry may impact the career of the therapist and may cost the person a lot of money if something went wrong. Therefore, it is essential for a Masseuse to be insured and have safety from any liability and harm done to the clients during their session.

Why Do Masseuses Need Insurance?

The massage therapy industry is all about providing the best healthy and relaxed service to customers. This profession involves a lot of risks related to client’s health and injury caused to them while having a massage. Therefore, the masseuses need to have insurance coverage to be secured and tension-free from the work. Along with providing peace of mind to the masseuse, it also offers them various financial benefits. For example: In case someone gets physically injured while having the massage and you are legally liable to pay for the injury caused to the client, then the insurance company will take of those expenses, and you will not be liable to pay any financial aid to the customer.

Another reason for having the insurance coverage is if your business may suffer any other huge financial loss such as criminal negligence lawsuits or acts of slander, then your insurance company will take care of all the situation, and which cover the cost involved.

What Types of Massage Therapist Insurance Are Available?

There are various types of massage therapist insurance available to both Registered Massage Therapist (RMT) and Non-Registered Massage Therapist (Non-RMT). A registered massage therapist (RMT) in British Columbia is a health professional regulated by CMTBC under BC’s Health Professions Act. All Practising CMTBC registrants are required to obtain professional liability insurance coverage of at least $2,000,000 per claim or occurrence.

The three main insurance coverage which you will be covered under the RMT are:

1. Professional Liability Insurance

It is also known as Errors & Omissions Insurance (E&O). This insurance focuses on protecting the massage operations. We know that you are trained and guided tediously to ensure that you understand the human body and are aware of how to give a massage to your clients. However, there is always a risk of clients being unhappy and feel unsatisfied with the services. E&O coverage covers any potential liability claims that could arise while you are massaging. This includes coverage for court, defence, and litigation costs should you be sued or have a legally instructed pay-out.

2. Commercial General Liability Insurance (CGL)

CGL Insurance is also an important aspect of your massage therapist policy. This will ensure that if there are any bodily injury (BI) or property damage (PD) claims that are not a direct result of your masseuse operations, you are covered. This can include incidents such as slips & falls at your premises, or if you damage somebody else property by mistake.

3. Business Content & Equipment Insurance (Property Coverage)

The items you use during your course of business make the cogs turn and everything runs smoothly. You can choose to insure any contents or equipment you use as part of your RMT work. This can include things like your massage tables, computers, and other items you deem important.

Massage Therapy Practice Safety

There are many risks involved for the clinic owners and massage therapists while providing the massages to the clients. The following risk management strategies to minimize the chance of legal liability actions are:

  1. Inspection and maintenance of all the equipment such as massage chairs and tables regularly to ensure the safety of both the patient and the practitioner.
  2. While providing the massage to the client, it is important to maintain continuous communication with them to ensure they are feeling comfortable and satisfied with the massage.
  3. Some new clients may feel apprehensive about the service, and it is important to have an after-session check-in with the clients to ensure they are happy with the services. Also, ask questions to the client post-session to know if they are feeling healthy and fine.
  4. Prevent and secure the personal information of your clients because a breach of privacy can cause them both civil and criminal complications.
